Home Security Tips

Blog

If recent criminal activity in your area has made you rethink the security of your home, then you want to take extra steps to ensure that your house is as secure as possible. You can learn about some of the things you could be doing to increase your home security by reading the following:

Have a family meeting about home security

The first thing you want to do is to have a family meeting and make sure everyone in your household knows what you expect from them regarding helping to keep your house a safer place. Some areas you want to cover include:

  • Locking the doors every time they come through them.
  • Checking to make sure their bedroom windows are locked securely before they go to bed.
  • Not opening the door to anyone before verifying who it is.
  • Making sure all the doors and windows are shut and locked if they are the last one to go to bed.

Don't keep any extra keys outside

You want to come up with a better plan for extra keys than leaving them under a rock or planter near the porch. If you feel the need to leave an extra key for in case of emergencies, then you should give one to a trusted neighbor to hold on to for you.

Consider getting a dog

If you have been thinking about adding a dog to your household, then this is a great time to do so. You don't have to have a trained guard dog to detour criminals from breaking into your home. Any dog that makes a lot of noise can be a big help with regards to preventing break-ins since they will wake you up and possibly even alert neighbors to a problem.

Add deadbolts to outside doors

Any of the doors around your house that have outdoor access should have deadbolt locks installed on them. Deadbolts are a lot harder for someone to get through than regular locks and can help to prevent a criminal from being able to pick their way into your house.

Install a security system with cameras

A security system that has security cameras will help to prevent criminals from attempting a break-in. If they do decide to ignore the system, then it will alert you and authorities to a problem and the cameras will capture everything so law enforcement can identify and prosecute the wrong-doers.

These tips will help you to make your house a more secure place for you and your family by reducing your chances of dealing with a break-in.
